Back Bay III
In the late 1700s, Boston saw rapid growth in its population; between
the years of 1790 - 1810, Boston's population doubled! The city began
creating land so that Bostonians could live, shop, and travel more easily.
The first land-making projects included building wharves along the
shoreline and filling in the Mill Pond. After filling the Mill Pond, the city
looked to the Back Bay as a new way to power the public gristmills.
