Back Bay IV

A new mill dam was built where present-day Beacon Street exists in the
Back Bay.  It was a toll road and one of five roads that crossed the Charles
River to connect Boston to the Commonwealth's mainland.  A cross dam
was also constructed at present-day Hemenway Street.

In the picture you can see the view from the top of the State House looking
out toward the Back Bay.  You can see the corner of present-day Beacon
and Arlington Streets where the water starts.  Look closely and you can
see the Cross Dam in the distance.
