The cross dam divided the Back Bay mill waters into two parts: a Full
Basin and a Receiving Basin.  In the picture below you can see the Full
Basin on the left and the larger Receiving Basin on the right.  At high tide,
water flowed in through the Full Basin Gates and through sluice ways in
the Cross Dam to power the mills.  Once the water passed through the
cross dam, it entered the Receiving Basin.  At low tide, the water then
flowed out through the second set of gates on the Mill Dam.
