Back Bay VI

In 1835, the first railroads in Boston were operational.  Trains went from
Boston to Lowell, Providence, and Worcester.  Here you can see the
Boston-Providence line (present-day Amtrak route) approaching the
Common and the State House.  On the left, the Boston-Worcester train
is approaching on what is now the Mass Pike.  The tracks of these two
lines meet at what it now Back Bay Station.  This 1839 engraving also
shows how the railroad companies built lines on embankments that ran
directly through the Back Bay marches.
