Back Bay IX
The land-making process in the Mill Dam area of the Back Bay continued from
the 1850s until the 1880s. New land-making projects were underway in the
Fenway and Longwood areas, but many city planners wanted to develop the
finished Back Bay area into residential space for wealthy Bostonians. The
Back Bay Act dictated that there be land for public purposes and in addition
to housing lots. The Back Bay was one of the first areas targeted for the
emerald necklace project in Boston to create more green public spaces.
The map shows an 1872 plan for the emerald necklace.
