Fort Hill III

After the fort was taken down, a landscaped circle was built in its place.
The area became a popular residential area in the 1800s for wealthy
merchants.  In the 1820s, those merchants moved to the more desirable
peaks of Beacon Hill.  Institutions such as the Boston Athenaeum bought
the mansions and moved.  In the 1840s the area soon became heavily
overcrowded as many immigrants moved to Boston.   The overcrowding
was so bad that some people even tunneled into Fort Hill for shelter.  In
1849 cholera infected Boston and hit the Fort Hill area particularly hard.
