North End VIII

Twenty one people were killed and another 150 injured by the disaster.
Rescue crews waded through the molasses to rescue people and to start
the clean-up process that took over six months of work.  Fire boats sprayed
the North end with salt water, attempting to wash away the stuborn, sticky
substance.  The harbor around the North End was stained brown for six
months after the explosion, and residents today claim that they can still
smell molasses on hot days.
