In order to complete these land-making projects, Boston developers used
the help of railroads.  For the South Bay project, the city's contractor built a
railroad from Quincy to South Boston.  Gravel fill was imported from Quincy
via the Old Colony Rail Road in order to fill the South Bay.  This procedure
was adopted in the next decade for the Back Bay land-making projects.
