South Boston IX

Dorchester Heights continued to be an important strategic location
for Boston's military until 1814.  At this point, the area became more
important to developers who saw the hills as an important resource
for expanding Boston.  In 1804, Boston annexed the Dorchester
Neck and Boston city planners and developers looked increasingly
to Boston's neighborhoods for space to expand the city.

During the second half of the 1800s, the hills at Dorchester
Heights flattened as Boston used the hills as raw material for
the city's expansion. Similar to the excavation process of the
Beacon Hills, South Boston saw the hills at Dorchester
Heights disappear as Boston grew.
